The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant just unveiled a major upgrade to its tsunami defenses.
A new 16-meter seawall, completed for TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company), will significantly reduce the risk of damage from future tsunamis triggered by earthquakes in the Japan Trench.
This project is particularly interesting for its use of innovative construction techniques.
Hirose Hokyodo, a Terre Armée licensee, played a key role by designing and supplying a 7,000 m² Reinforced Earth® wall.
Notably, they successfully incorporated “ashcrete,” a special material combining coal ash and cement, for the embankment. This not only offered rapid hardening but also eliminated the need for additional strip support structures, streamlining the construction process.
Hirose’s expertise in Terre Armée technology was instrumental in delivering a safe and efficient solution for this critical infrastructure project through technical assistance on-site and supplying components.
